    Story

Since 2004, The Skye and Lochalsh Meat Supply Group has been dedicated to the IMPROVEMENT of the meat supply chain in the region, and the development of appropriately scaled, fit for purpose slaughter facilities.

We have secured full planning permission to build a SUITABLE facility for the region in Portree on the Isle of Skye.

Our fully-costed operational business plan demonstrates the STRENGTH of local demand from both producer suppliers and consumer groups, and also outlines how a fully CO-OPERATING meat supply chain can be established in the region.

With the creation of 4 full time jobs, and an expectation to be operational to full capacity within the first five years, this project has the OPPORTUNTIY to substantially contribute towards the economic, social and environmental security and SUSTAINABILITY of the region in both the agricultural and food service industries.

We now need the help of the WIDER COMMUNITY and YOU to start raising at least 7 % of the funds towards building this key piece of infrastructure for the area. We are very GRATEFUL for your support, and THANK YOU for your contribution.

    BACKGROUND :
There was a time across the Highlands and Islands of Scotland when sustainable, small scale crofting and farming communities were facilitated by local slaughter houses.

From the 1950’s to 1990’s, the idea of local production was usurped by commercial, high volume, small profit margin farming. During this time, local slaughter facilities were closed and centralized, undermining the viability of hill farm and small croft meat production in remote areas. This also removed from the local market meaningful access to locally produced meat products.

Today in the region, a farmer wishing to have an animal slaughtered requires transportation over 150 miles by land. Return home of carcasses for local processing and marketing is no longer available. We wish to return to a sustainable model of meat production for the region.
