Story
One morning I woke up numb. I made an appointment with my GP. Within days of being at the GP I was tripping on uneven pavements, legs and arms going like jelly. Then I lost control of my body movements my arms and legs were moving and spasming on their own I was so weak I couldn't cut my dinner and was taken to A&E. 2 days later I lost the feeling completely in my left leg. The ambulance was called. I tried to continue working but walking to and from was such a challenge and eventually I struggled to type and hold a phone. I had to resign. I was taking what I now call dystonic storms frequently, the more I tried to do the worse and longer the dystonic storms. I saw a neurologist and after ruling out epilepsy I was diagnosed with FND Functional Neurological Disorder. Physio was recommended. I found the charity FNDHope and started trying to understand the diagnosis. My mobility declined rapidly with frequent muscle spasms and weakness walking any distance was impossible. Physio was such a battle with my body and eventually after a session I took a seizure that was the end of physio therapy for me! It was around this time that James had to resign from work to care for me.
I was then seen by the rehabilitation clinic and through them got a manual wheel chair this meant I could get out of the house with my family. The rest is just daily living with the illness and learning to manage it. There is no cure and doctors don't really fully understand what causes the brain to send and receive incorrect signals. For me it includes muscle spasms (dystonia) of all major muscles which strike when they want from feet to face, they can last seconds or I can have a dystonic storm which is like a very animated seizure they can last any where from 30 mins to 5 hours! seizures, motor and vocal tics, fatigue, tinnitus. Noise and light sensitivity. Weakness and pain.

7 years agoA big Thank you to all who have donated so far. Here is a link to the chair we are raising funds for. https://www.wheelchair88.com/product/foldawheel-pw-1000xl/ It folds down easily making it convenient for my husband to put in the boot of our car. It also means it can be easily stored. This chair will make the everyday run abouts easier and my hubby won't need to push me everywhere. Keep your eye on the Facebook event page for info on the most generous donation. Coming soon....
