Story
Stephen Rooney is a fantastic 17 year old Saltburn lad, who has a rare learning disability. But despite his day-to-day challenges he has been selected to represent Redcar & Cleveland at the Special Olympics GB in Sheffield in 2017, to play the amazing sport of Boccia.
We want you to be part of his journey, by donating whatever you can afford to give, every pound will be appreciated.
What is the problem the project is addressing?
Stephen and his family have limited resources, but dearly want to attend the Special Olympics GB in Sheffield in August 2017. Stephen’s family are rallying around and holding charity evenings in and around Redcar and Cleveland, supported by many local businesses including the mighty Middlesbrough FC who have donated signed items for auctions.
The cost for such an event not only includes budget hotels and travel to and from Sheffield but also the cost of the team kit.
We have put a target of £800, for just Stephen, Achieving this amount will see him compete in Sheffield in 2017 at Boccia.
How will this project solve the problem?
This project will help give Stephen the chance to compete at the Special Olympics GB. It will enable Stephen to raise the profile of disability sports in Redcar & Cleveland and around the North East and inspire other young adults and children with disabilities to get involved in disability sports. Raising awareness about disability in a sporting context draws attention to the need for more services and provisions for disabled people and in particular support for people with learning disabilities.
