    Story

Hi, my name is Stephen I am 18. I have quadriplegic cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus and use a powered wheelchair...

"I discovered Wheelchair Football five years ago. I train with my team, the Bolton Bullets, at Smithills Sports Centre in Bolton, and currently play in the Northwest Powerchair Football League and the WFA National League in Nottingham. I love it and have not looked back since.

"I started playing using my day chair and attaching a special bumper to it. I then managed to get a sports chair and my game improved. However the game has moved on and the chairs have improved. The new chairs are fast with two powerful motors designed for maximum maneuverability, which will improves the ability to strike the big football with accuracy and power.

"For me to progress to the next level of the sport, I need the Equaliser Powerchair which is made locally in Liverpool. This means it can be specially made for me. I am looking forward to being able to develop my skills and become an even better player. I am so proud to be part of something so exciting and a growing sport both in this country and worldwide."

Just trying out my mate's Equaliser...mmm, nice...

We will be taking part in a series of sponsored events to help Stephen achieve his goal, starting with the Great North Swim.

If you can help in any way, that would be great, thank you...

It helps youngsters have fun and enjoy a sport and be part of a team, notwithstanding their disabilities. The club relies on donations by individuals to keep the club running which allows youngsters to have the opportunity to play football, on modified wheelchairs.

Well, it’s been two weeks since we did the swim…we are now fully recovered (just joking) and are so grateful for your love, support and your amazing donations. To date, you have raised £365 through JustGiving and another £195 through other donations (work sponsorship etc) – that's a massive £560 which is fabulous, and means Shirley can put down a deposit for Stephen’s 'Equaliser' powerchair!! So, to all you lovely people…THANK YOU !!! We're now planning the next event as part of our fund-raising mini-adventure...piccy's a clue...stay tuned!!

Well, last night Sheila and I went training and completed our 1/2 mile in something like a decent time. Swimming in wet suits is way harder than 'normal' swimming - your buoyancy is all wrong, your legs seem to want to rise up...consequently your body and head want to go down, making coming up for air harder work than usual. Wearing wet socks makes it even worse so we have abandoned them...All good fun, we'll get the hang of it eventually...mind you, not got that long...it's this Sunday (eek...). Thank you all, your support is appreciated...

A heart felt thank you from Sheila and myself for so generously donating towards Stephen's football powerchair - together you have raised 10% of our £2000 target which is absolutely brilliant!!! ((I tried to work out how to thank you individually in person, but seems I can't, as email addresses are not given out by JustGiving which is fair enough...))
