Story
I'm running in the Great Manchester 10K next month to raise money to help fund a month of volunteering in Uganda with S.A.L.V.E International, this summer. I am aiming to raise £850, half of which I am donating to S.A.L.V.E International, and the other half will help cover some of my transport costs this summer.
S.A.L.V.E International is a UK and Ugandan based charity supporting children to prevent them living on the streets in Uganda. They do this through support, love, family reunification and education. During my time in Uganda, I will be helping to run programmes such as S.A.L.V.E.'s Inequality Project and the Street Outreach Programme.
The Street Outreach Programme is a project designed to build and strengthen relationships with children living on the streets. Some of the activities that this consists of are street walks, street sports and a drop-in centre. The drop in centre is open Monday to Friday and has space for up to 10 children per day. It is a place where children can get more counselling and support to plan their pathway off the streets. There are also a variety of activities at the centre; for example 1-2-1 and group counselling, art, drama, dance, music, life skills classes and career guidance.
The Inequality Challenge is a monthly question that explores issues around inequality. Led by young people who are currently, or have previously, lived on the streets of Uganda and supported by S.A.L.V.E. International, the challenge helps promote community empowerment and greater equality in the town of Jinja, Uganda.
