Story
Conor and I are climbing Snowdon May Bank Holiday 2018 to raise the money to create a soft & bouncy play area.
Every year Conor and I go to Isle of Wight for a week on a Freedom Family Holiday at East Dene Mansion in Bonchurch.
It was created by Dee the owner and this will be its 11th year. Dee and her team have established a supportive, non-judgemental environment, a life-line to many. Families are encouraged to treat the Victorian Mansion as their own home. All meals are provided (selective & restrictive diets too) there are woodlands to explore, a range of children’s activities, a heated pool and more.
This is a truly unique experience for families affected Autism.
Autism is a complex, invisible disability that affects the way that a person processes the world around them often resulting in unusual and challenging behaviour, for families this can mean that they can become extremely isolated.
At East Dene we can allow our children, often for the first time, the freedom to play on the grounds and without us attached to them, with no-one staring, making comments. For the parents and carers, meeting and spending time with others that 'just get it' is priceless.
However, for some their Autism is so complex they are not able to access the vast selection of activities available and for their safety they must have a carer with them at all times. Those that are able go offsite, one parent they took their son swimming in the sea 18 times in one week, for some going off-site is not an option.
I wondered last year what could these families do with on site and a ball-pit soft-play seemed to be the answer. I asked if we could raise some money to pay for it so that it didn't cost the families anymore and Dee said yes! I found a fabulous guy called Jon at JJ Bouncy Castles and together we came up with the idea of creating a fun space in the coach house at East Dene.
