Story
Whilst making a short film in Ghana last year for The Overseas Development Institute, I filmed with one young man, Iliasu. Iliasu had polio as a child and consequently lost the use of his legs entirely and will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
Iliasu however isn't one to lie down and let his situation defeat him. When I met him I was struck by his determination to break free from the cycle of poverty his condition had forced him into.
Iliasu wants to set up his own mobile money business, a service whereby he uses mobile SIM cards to transfer money between people's phones - it's a system common in Ghana where most people don't have a formal bank account.
To set up this business, underneath a tree near his house, Iliasu needs the equivalent of £300 to buy the SIM cards and invest in credit that he will give to his customers. Each time a transaction is made, Iliasu will make a little money and he aims to spend his profits re-investing in the business to grow it further.
Please help this entrepreneurial young man escape his situation and realise his dreams of owning his own business.

8 years agoTo all the lovely hearts that funded this - am very happy to post an update from Iliasu who has used the money to now setup his own Mobile Money business in Tamale, Northern Ghana. The income he makes is also going towards funding a college degree where he hopes to better himself even further. Ilasu wants to thank everyone for the support you have given. Here he is beside his small stall - it might not look like much but this small endeavour is helping him to escape poverty. Thanks again from him and thanks from me. Tim X
