I've lived and worked in Canterbury for much of my adult life, and am dismayed by the sharp increase in the number of homeless people I see huddled in doorways as I make my way home at night. It used to be the case that, even if I did not know their names, I recognised the same half a dozen faces: now, there seem to be more week on week. The bottom line is that, in a wealthy country, no-one should be homeless, but more and more we are seeing not simply people with substance abuse issues or mental health difficulties, but 'ordinary' people who have been swiftly pushed to the margins of society by something as mundane as a short-term illness, a change in benefits, a relationship breakdown or a cut in hours. I know more than a few of us are potentially 2-3 pay checks away from a similar situation. That is why I am doing this run for Shelter at the end of the year. I am running with a group of 4 who have pledged to raise £799 between us so am trying to raise £250 to more than cover my end. Thanks
