    Story

Langa is Cape Town's oldest township, established in 1927 as a designated area for Black South Africans before the Apartheid era.

I met Chris and Bulumko, the owners of Kaffa Hoist, when I visited Langa in Feb 2017. They opened the cafe in 2016 having worked tirelessly for years with the aim of starting a business that would inspire others in the township to follow suit. They are some of the warmest, welcoming people I have ever met.

Living conditions in Langa vary from area to area, but a vast number of families still live in shacks of corrugated iron, protected from the rain only by plastic coverings, with no supply of clean water or electricity. Exposed wires run through the streets. Our guide informed us that she wakes in the morning afraid to hear the news of the families who have been caught up in electrical fires during the night.

Another problem is plastic litter, which is everywhere.

Kaffa Hoist (the name literally means 'Coffee' and 'to lift up') is built into the side of the theatre in the Guga S’Thebe Arts and Cultural Centre, which is built from shipping containers! They made me the best egg and avocado sarnie I have ever tasted and talked to me about South African politics and what it is like living in Langa.

I would love to send this fantastic, inspirational couple a supply of Vegware for their coffee shop: fully biodegradable coffee cups, smoothie cups, plates, forks, knives and sandwich boxes. I firmly believe that it is up to those of us with the means available to do something small to help our environment and our fellow humans, and I would love to help free this small, awesome business from plastic trash. Please help me do so! I will match all donations with my own money to try and raise as much as possible.

All money will go towards a supply of Vegware as well as its delivery to Langa.
