On our treks to the Himalayas, my husband and I met some inspiring individuals who were working tirelessly to address the governance gaps through grass-root initiatives. Having trekked upto 5000 mtrs, we have seen how treacherous terrains, severe weather and the lack of government support affect the mountainous communities. UTSAAH stands for Uniting to Sustain and Assist the Himalayan communities. Its also an Sanskrit word and it means Enthusiasm. Through our work we want to enthuse like-minded individuals to come and support the inspiring initiatives taking place in the mountains. We work with NGOs and Social Enterprises that have a focus on maternal health, livelihood, eco-tourism, sustainability and education. The funds raised through this run will support the work of Kalap Trust (www.kalaptrust.org), Spiti Ecosphere (www.spitiecosphere.com) and other initiatives who are working tirelessly to sustain the Himalayan spirit, culture and communities.
