Story
This is Violet, an incredible little girl born with severe brain damage and other conditions that have turned her amazing family’s world upside down.
Violet’s proud dad Gavin and nine of his friends are taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in September to raise money to support Violet’s ongoing development and to enable her to live as independently as possible in the future.
Violet made an unexpected and emergency entrance to the world on 6 November 2017, requiring back-to-back blood transfusions after being resuscitated at birth.
Violet has since been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which affects all four of her limbs, and global development delay. She is 19 months old and is unable to roll, crawl, walk or use her hands.
She also has epilepsy and can have as many as 200 spasms every day, which can be very distressing and drain her of energy meaning she sleeps. A lot.
Despite all of the challenges and her difficult start to life, Violet is a beautiful and happy little girl. She is a real fighter with an inner steel and determination to face these daily hurdles head on with the unwavering love and support from her amazing family – but they now need our support to improve Violet’s quality of life.
The family home in King’s Lynn needs to be extended and adapted so Violet can have a bedroom and washroom downstairs, along with alterations to the layout for wheelchair access. This is a big ‘one off’ project that will make a huge difference to Violet but there will also be ongoing costs as she grows.
For example, Violet will need regular sessions with physiotherapists, osteopaths and other medical professionals moving forward to help her development.
She will also require specialist equipment to assist her with everyday motions and tasks, and a lot of items will need to be regularly replaced as she grows.
Just to give you an idea, Violet recently got two new specialist seats - an everyday seat that supports Violet so she can sit up in the house and another to enable her to enjoy the bath.
The seats cost a combined £800 but both are only likely to last Violet a few years until she outgrows them or they break. An adapted pushchair for children with additional needs was a further £500 - it's a lot of money but the value to Violet is priceless, as they enable her to be with her family and do things we perhaps all take for granted.
Gavin, Laura, Kai, Lennon and Violet have had incredible support from family and friends – and nine of those friends will join Gavin to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on 14 September to help raise some of that money.
While the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is nothing in comparison to the journey Violet has ahead of her, walking a 24-mile route with 1585 meters of ascent inside 12 hours will almost certainly prove a challenge for this group of thirty-something dads with extremely questionable levels of fitness!
But the boys are determined to complete the challenge in the hope that you kind people, reading this page, will consider donating some of your hard-earned money that will go towards paying for vital equipment, treatments and alterations to the home that will have a huge impact on Violet’s quality of life.
Bethanie Castledine helped to raise more than £1,000 for Violet by running the GEAR 10k in May. You can view that fundraising page here.
