Story
I was involved in a serious car accident in 2009 involving a drunk driver, whilst I was on holiday in America. I suffered many life threatening injuries that would change my life for ever. The only way the emergency services could save my life was to amputate my left leg above the knee. However after many months of hospitalisation and rehabilitation I recovered from my ordeal. I knew that I had to get my life back together because due to the strange laws in America the only insurance cover I received for my injuries was for my hospital care whilst in America. Then I was on my own.
Now 7 years on I am now back at work full time I am mobile both with a wheelchair and a prosthetic leg which is provided by the NHS. Since my accident my needs have changed and I try wherever possible to live my life in the "main stream".
On a recent annual visit to the hospital I explained my needs had changed to my physician but also that opportunities for greater involvement, responsibilities and different activities in my employment were open to me if I could achieve greater mobility and improved stability (as I now have little or no sense of balance).
My physician explained that there were a number of state of the art prosthetic legs that would suit my needs perfectly and would improve my quality of life beyond recognition. The down side is that these legs are not available to me (they would be had I served in the forces). The funding from the NHS does not cover these types of limbs.
The only way I can get a specialist limb is for my needs is to fund it myself. It was suggested by a close friend to try crowd funding and so it is now my goal to raise a minimum of £50,000 to enable me to get the leg my Physician says I require.
Please help me in any way that you can, any donation will be greatly appreciated but also please forward my story to your friends and colleagues.
Thank you
Wayne
