I've now finished the ride, having arrived safely in Bristol with the whole team on Thursday 11 June.  Thank you to everyone for your support and generosity - at 630km the ride was a bit further than anticipated, but I'm delighted to have done it.

To celebrate Bristol’s year as European Green Capital in 2015 I’ll be cycling from Brussels to Bristol in early June – and need your donations to make it worth all the hard work!

I'll be accompanying European Commission colleagues on their journey from Brussels, as we cover approximately 550km over five gruelling days; taking in as much of the glorious countryside and wildlife along the way as we can.

Please make a donation to help me raise £2,015 to support the work Avon Wildlife Trust will be doing in Bristol during the city’s year as Green Capital – including the distribution of thousands of wildlife garden starter kits to residents and businesses, the creation of city-wide wildlife corridors, and the opening of its new nature reserve along the Portway; one of the main commuter routes into the city.

My training is already well underway (he says far too confidently) but any tips on how not to be plagued by punctures and saddle sores along the way are welcome.

I’m assured that our route across the channel will be assisted by the Calais-Dover ferry, so the only time I’ll need specialist breathing equipment will be at the top of one or two of the tougher climbs!

At the end of it I’ll be putting my feet up for a well-earned rest and enjoying Bristol's Festival of Nature and Big Green Week.
