Lands End to John O'Groats · 5 June 2010
Day 10 . On Monday 14th June we arrived at John O'Groats, shortly after six in the evening. We had riden over 1100 miles due to our slightly zig zag route, so considerably further than the 874 miles that it should be if you take the most direct route, but we wanted to see more of the spectacular British countryside on route. We were really elated and very glad to see the road run out. So much of the journey had been testing with cold, windy and wet days being more the norm and saddle sores being compulsory. But we had arrived!!! We all want to thank our sponsor Sudocrem without whom I fear our bottoms would not have made it!
As soon as I agreed with Andrew to do the trip I wanted to use the challenge to try and raise some money for a worth while cause. Our neighbours little boy Jonty, who was the sweetest little boy, terribly sadly died and I wanted to show his mother that we are still thinking of him. As often as I could I thought of Jonty during the trip and hoped he was in some way with me and experiencing some of the spectacular views (like climbing and descending the Kirkstone Pass in the Lake District or the rolling Moors of the Peak District). He was cared for brilliantly by the Doctors and Nurses of Great Ormond Street Hospital and this is what I was riding for. I hope that a small donation on this sight by you might help to continue and improve their work for other little children like Jonty.
Day 8, Saturday 12th June
Reached Fort William today and went for a swim in the chilly waters of Loch Ness. Only 190 miles left now, heading for Inverness tomorrow.
Day 7, Friday 11th June
Still on schedule, arrived in Scotland on Thursday via the Lake District and Peak District, 12-16 hrs cycling a day, with 150 miles covered on Wednesday. Arrived this evening on the shores of Loch Lomond, after another 120 miles covered today, totalling 770 miles in 7 days.
Only 265 miles left, hoping that legs and bikes hold out. Weather has been pretty tough: cloudy, cold, wet and now very windy. Most of the day we were riding into a stiff head wind, so every mile seemed twice as long! Can`t wait till we reach John O`Groats, will update soon!
Captain`s Log Day 4, Tuesday 8th June
Reached the middle of Peak District, Hartington Hall YHA, 390 miles covered, in good spirits, although ma derrier might choose to differ...
Thank you to all of you who are thinking of us, or have made a donation.
Onto Lake Windermere tomorrow on Day 5, hoping for a swim!!!
