Buntingford Year End 10 Mile Race · 28 December 2009

ReachOut works with 8 to 18-year-olds in disadvantaged communities, providing one-to-one mentoring and team activities that help them grow in character and competence. Our structured, focused programme gives over a thousand children every year the confidence and skills needed for a brighter future!

Story

Well done on finding my JustGiving page- now please just give!

I am trying to raise money through running this race for Reachout as I think it is a fantastic charity, and one that is already close to my heart after working with them for the past few months.

So, what does Reachout do? Here's an extract from their website- it says it better than I could:

ReachOut! is a voluntary mentoring programme which started in Moss Side in Manchester in 1994. Today each week, hundreds of children and young people in London, Glasgow and Manchester can enjoy a 2-hour, one-on-one mentoring session with a young adult.

ReachOut! creates, develops and supports dynamic mentoring relationships and community partnerships so as to inspire young people aged 8 and over to learn new skills, broaden their horizons, aim high and be the best they can be.

The mentoring relationships are based on sharing core values and encouraging good citizenship, addressing the specific needs of each person through individually structured competence- and character-building activities with a teamwork and problem-solving approach, so that together, we can.”

Personally, I work on the football project on Saturday mornings in Wythenshawe. In this, kids from Moss Side and Wythenshawe come together for a three-hour extravaganza of football training and maths-and-english learning with a mini football tournament to finish. For me, this is a great way to end my week and I feel that the kids enjoy it too. I think also that working on this project has made me evaluate my prejudices, as these kids are great kids: they just want to play and learn and have a laugh with their mates, and don't deserve to be written off just because of what neighbourhood they're from.

I understand this isn't the greatest time to be doing fund-raising, what with xmas spending and (for us tax-dodging students) loans running out, but I think (pre-emptive apology for cliché) due to the scale at which Reachout works, whether it be running a project with 40 kids or one-to-one mentoring in the home of a disabled child, every little bit can make a difference, so please donate now!

Thank you for your donation and your time,

Dan Ansell
