Story

David and Tom have decided on a very unusual and exciting way to raise funds for Bury Cancer Support Centre and the Nepal Crisis Appeal.  In April 2016 David  age 59 and son Tom age 30, will be leaving the comfort of their homes to fly to the Nepalese mountain airport in Lukla. Tenzing Hilary Airport situated high in the Himalayas is known as one of the world's most dangerous airports.

They will travel independently to Nepal and will hire the services of a local guide to walk with them to the base camp.  Since the devastating earthquakes last year there are less visitors and the local economy of the Nepalese people is suffering.  Whilst they are there they would like to help a local charity.  Nepal is in the top 30 poorest countries in the world.

This trip is made more remarkable by the fact that in April 2015 David was diagnosed with bowel cancer.  He has made a successful recovery from the operation and only one year on would like to acknowledge the support he received from Bury Cancer Support Centre by raising much needed funds.

During the two week trek David and Tom will be mindful of the problems of altitude which is seen as the main challenge for all walkers. They will have to rest two days to acclimatise during this time.  They expect the ascent to be 8 days and the descent 4 days.  Base Camp is a 38 mile trek from the airport.  To put this into perspective, base camp is 4 times higher than Ben Nevis.  They will be carrying approximately 10 kilos in their rucksacks containing, sleeping bags, supplies and purified water tablets.  They will sleep in lodges where they can buy water and food.  When they are walking they will be several hours between water stops.

Another hazard is the yaks that are known to be fierce animals and they will have to walk on the correct side of the path from them.

David and Tom are very modest about their endeavours and claim that base camp is achievable by anyone who is reasonably fit.  They will be training for the event by hiking and climbing the Lake District 3 Peaks as part of their preparation.  When they are on the trek they will be walking at a sensible pace rather than rushing.  In the past Tom has climbed the Lake District 3 Peaks over 3 days, the Fa Xin Pan Mountain in Vietnam 3100 metres and Mount Olympus from sea level to summit.

David and Tom are looking for sponsors for this trek for Bury Cancer Support Centre.  They want to stress that they are funding the entire trip themselves and all money raised will be for charity.

Bury Cancer Support Centre would like to thank David and Tom very much and wish them both well on this challenge.
