Vienna Marathon · 1 March 2007

Stephanie Moore MBE set up the Bobby Moore Fund in partnership with Cancer Research UK, following the death of her husband, Bobby Moore, from bowel cancer. The Bobby Moore Fund is now a leader in the fight against bowel cancer, funding research that’s helping more people to survive than ever before.

Story

Thank you for having a look at my page.

In August 2006 my greatest friend Giles Cowley, after a gladiatorial battle of nearly four years, lost his brave fight against bowel cancer at the ridiculous age of just 44. He leaves behind his extraordinarily courageous wife Bexie and adorable children Livvy and Fergus.

It takes a lot to get me to run 26 miles but I am so determined to help prevent other families suffering in this way. I am thrilled Bexie chose the Bobby Moore Fund, which is so specific to the illness Giles fought, and obviously the football link (Giles was a long suffering Ipswich Town fan.... like me!) would thrill Giles too.

I am running with a great friend, Trevor Pickett and my personal target is £20,000 which all goes directly to the Bobby Moore Fund.

Thank you,

Dennis

Further Information about the Charity

In one year alone, bowel cancer will claim the lives of over 16,500 people - that is more than double the total runners in the Vienna Marathon! These statistics are truly frightening. With the exception of lung cancer, bowel cancer claims more lives in the than any other cancer. However, if diagnosed and treated early, bowel cancer is over 90% curable.

Since 1993, the Fund has raised over £7 million and has funded pioneering research through fifteen Research Fellowships. The Fund has opened a Bobby Moore laboratory at St Mark’s Hospital, which is recognised as a leading centre of excellence both clinically and scientifically. The Bobby Moore Fund is a part of Cancer Research , which is also committed to raising the awareness of bowel cancer, and played an important role in lobbying of the government on bowel cancer screening.

Your donation will go a long way towards funding a new Bobby Moore Fund clinical Research Fellowship or a Bobby Moore Project Award, ensuring the continuation of the vital first class research. To guarantee scientific excellence, these are awarded on an extremely competitive basis, allowing only the best scientists to undertake relevant and innovative clinical and translational research for three to four years.

At present, 45 people die everyday from bowel cancer in the .  With your support, we can continue to fund vital research and together, help tackle bowel cancer.
