Story
Between 13 and 16 July 2013, eight intrepid adventurers from DLA Piper's Liverpool office will be risking aching limbs and serious saddle sores as they cycle between DLA Piper's English offices.
Team Lycra
Four of us (John Delamere, Paul Walsh, Richard Allan and Chris Bujac) will be clad in ill-fitting lycra and will be starting in London and then taking the high road to visit Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester before returning to Liverpool.
Team Baggies
The other four of us (John Gollaglee, Maria Fitzpatrick, Michael Doleman and Paul Shutler) will be in baggier attire and will be starting in Leeds before taking a mostly off-road route back to Liverpool via Sheffield and Manchester.
That means we will be cycling around 2000 miles between us. We're hoping to raise at least £1 per mile for Alzheimer's Society, and any donations you make will be very gratefully received.
You can find out more about dementia and the fantastic work Alzheimer's Society does at www.alzheimers.org.uk, but by way of quick overview:
- it is estimated that one in three people over 65 will develop dementia;
- the term dementia describes a set of symptoms including memory loss, mood changes, problems with communication and reasoning, and loss of mobility. Dementia is not a natural part of growing old but is caused by diseases of the brain, the most common being Alzheimer's;
- Alzheimer's Society provides day care and home care for people with dementia, as well as support to help partners and families cope with the demands of caring;
- Alzheimer's Society is involved with research to help improve the quality of life for people with dementia, by tackling questions related to the causes of dementia, investigating good practice in care and treatment, and pursuing a cure.
