We did it!!!!!
Team Salford (the 'Chapeau') arrived safely into Lourdes on Monday 29th July after 11 gruelling days in the saddle.
A truly amazing journey with an immense effort by everyone in the team to keep going despite the pain in various bits of our bodies!
Thanks for all your donations so far, please keep them coming!
"Are you a keen cyclist?"
"No"
"You are now!"
This was the conversation that made me realise the size of the challenge that I had just commited to. After casually agreeing to cycle all the way to Lourdes in the south of France as if it was a slightly tricky trip to the shops! In fact it is a distance of 900 miles to be completed in ten days!
Every logical bone in my body told me this was not a challenge that I should accept. Not being a remotely keen cyclist, not having a road bike, not having done more than 6 miles cycling, taking three weeks off from work (unpaid as I am self employed) and toughest of all, being away from my gorgeous baby son and wife for eleven days - all these things were good reasons not to go.
I then realised that they were excuses and not reasons. This challenge is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and one that I am lucky enough to be able to complete (hopefully!).I would have been crazy not to accept it and I am lucky to be completing it with a great bunch of lads.
Last year was my first experience of Lourdes and it had an immediate effect on me. As I said to someone whilst there last year, wether you are religious or not, to see so many people of all ages giving up their time and money simply to help other people in need is an amazing thing to see and really puts thing into perspective.
We are cycling to raise money so that children with special needs and/or disabilities and their families can take part in the pilgramage to Lourdes this year. The cost per child is around £800 and each cyclist in our team is hoping to pay the cost of at least one child.
Any donation you can afford to give will be massively appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Dom
