Sharon Rubens is raising money for Duchenne UK

In memory of Mike Rubens

As the leading Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) charity in the UK, we want to find effective treatments for DMD and end its devastating impact. We’re going further than anyone has before, and we’re doing it faster, because this generation of people living with DMD can’t wait.

Story

It was with overwhelming sadness that we had to say goodbye to Mike last week. He was incredibly warm, generous and loving as a friend, a dad and a husband. Mike put everything he had into the relationships he made and we know he will be missed by so many. We would like it if people made a donation in his memory to one of two charities: Macmillan Cancer Support or Duchenne Children's Trust. We would like to split the money evenly between the two charities, but if you have a partiular preference for one or the other that's fine too.

Mike's beautiful nephew Eli was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy a couple of years ago. This is a degenerative, life-limiting condition. Eli's parents have set up a charity to raise money to help to fund research for a cure. Family was so important to Mike and he would love to know that some money was going towards supporting this cause for Eli and children like him.

Throughout Mike's illness he spent a lot of time at the Macmillan Cancer Centre in London. Everybody we met there treated us with such kindness and care. In particular, the Macmillan nurses, who would take the time to sit and talk to Mike and I, were amazing. They treated him as a person rather than a patient and always lifted his spirits. We both always felt safe in their hands there and the way they supported us helped to make an incredibly difficult experience more bearable. We would like to think that by donating to Macmillan we can help ensure other families who are going through such heartache can continue to experience similar support.

Thank you for your donations.
