Story

This won't be easy. I'm not a borderline alcoholic, at all. Although I've definitely woken up on too many mornings and thought very poorly of myself - haven't we all?

Anyway... Last year, my sister showed me a video of a classroom of children in Burundi, opening shoeboxes over Christmas that contained things that you and I would probably consider day-to-day items.

If you haven't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzUhsxD3OF8

The look on their faces was a picture. I couldn't believe how something so routine to us made such a difference to a child much less fortunate.

I have never been massively 'over-the-top' for Christmas, but believe that the whole period has become massively over-commercialised and in recent years I've started to appreciate what it's actually about.

This challenge is by no means a preach or attempt to make others overhaul their festive-season normalities, but I wanted to see how I could change mine to improve theirs.

So, I came to the conclusion that while I can no longer keep up with my younger self and hit the town as much these days, I certainly love to enjoy the odd beer or three with the boys.

The reason I'm doing this over Christmas and starting in December...because it's the hardest month not to have any alcohol! All those work parties, socials with friends and family. The list goes on! Not to mention the New Year champagne.

Also, I have always been curious as to how many benefits to overall health are gained by going completely dry for a long period. Not to mention how much money could be spared.

Understandably, a lot of this challenge is done on trust as I won't be supervised 24/7. However most of the time I will be. So, here are the consequences...

If I am to have so much as a sip of alcohol before June 1st, 2017:

- I will donate three times the amount of money in the fund at the time, or a minimum of £500, whichever is more at the time.

- I will shave my eyebrows off.

- I will accept that I am an absolute let down and will be thought of in a very dim light by anyone who knows me.

Pretty serious stuff, I think, although am open to suggestions for more punishments.

This may sound easy to some of you, however, those who know me will know I enjoy a tipple (especially over Christmas). And if it's easy, get involved and have a go yourself!

Let's do this for those kids! I wish everyone a fabulous, happy, and very alcoholically enhanced Christmas.

Thanks a lot, much love to you all!
