Story
Eddnets raises funds to purchase Long Life Treated malaria Nets (LLTNs) in rural areas of Northern Mozambique far from any established malaria net programmes. There, one in five children under the age of five die from malaria that is largely preventable and treatable. A long life net can provide a couple of children with protection from malaria and costs £5. If a whole community have access to nets than the overall incidence of malaria can be dramatically reduced. Working with the Anglican church in London’s partner diocese, Eddnets hopes to see this happen on a village by village basis.
Edd was a very special young man: a talented musician with a wonderful smile who died in 2005 from a brain tumour when he was 19. Living without him is hard but there is comfort in knowing that his cancer treatment was without compromise – everything that could have been done was done. This is a comfort not afforded to families who lose children to malaria.
To date Eddnets has raised almost £15,000 and our particular thanks must go to Naz Pambakian, Pete Jenks and Tom Hewson who have made marathon efforts (literally!), also to Twyford School and Fellowship Group and to Edd’s extended family and friends. Sometimes we receive a £5 note with a simple message ‘felt like buying Edd a drink last night’. It’s positive, even transformative, to be able to do something so practical whilst grieving and remembering Edd.
Thanks are also due to ALMA (London diocese’s link with the Anglican church in Angola and Mozambique www.almalink.org) and to the LDF which kindly administers and stewards Eddnets thus avoiding much duplication of effort.
2010 will see a major Eddnets distribution which we'll update you on. We continue to raise funds each year as it means another village can benefit from net provision. When everyone has nets we'll stop! Until then -
Thank you for all your support and generosity.
