Eleanor Ghislaine Azfar (nee Clapp)
Born 21/07/1969
Died 07/07/2014
At the Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford from an aggressive brain tumour.
Eleanor, the only child of Andrew and Heather, was brought up firstly in Weymouth, Dorset and the family then moved to Gunnislake, Cornwall where she studied at Plymouth Girls High School. It was here she met her lifelong friend Helen.
She was accepted at Christchurch College, University of Oxford to study Classics. Following graduation Eleanor worked as a PA to Mohamed Al-Fayed at Harrods in London for a year.
She decided to become a teacher so she could continue as a classicist and so studied for her PGCE at Cambridge.
Following this she spotted an advert for a classics teacher vacancy at Bradford Girls Grammar School and headed North. She was very taken with the school and started teaching in the 1993-4 academic year. Eleanor decided to register at the local dental practice and was given an appointment to see Ali. This led to an invitation from Ali to meet socially, however Eleanor had a boyfriend and turned Ali down.
A year passed and, in the new academic year of 1995, Eleanor was spotted by Ali walking past the practice and then coming back the other way - she called in to leave a card with reception. Ali was given the card, in which Eleanor had asked if the invitation was still open, and a few days later they had their first date at Beeties restaurant in Saltaire.
Romance followed and within the year they were engaged and living together in Horsforth. They married in April 1997 and the next month moved to the family home just outside Saltaire. Beattie was born 9 months later, Theo arrived with the new Millennium and Freddie was born in 2003.
In between times Eleanor and Ali formed a lifelong bond with Filey - firstly buying a holiday flat, and then a house there. Many of their happiest memories are of seaside holidays there, and Eleanor used to say it very much reminded her of being a child in Weymouth.
Eleanor remained busy as a classics teacher at BGGS and enjoyed her professional life very much. She was always busy and very happy being a mum, teacher and best friend and wife to Ali.
Eleanor's brain cancer was diagnosed in February 2011 and she was determined to live as long as she could to allow the children as much time as possible to grow up before she would have to leave them. She did this with fortitude and courage, supported by Ali.
Eleanor is survived by her devoted husband Ali, daughter Beattie and sons Theo and Freddie. She is also survived by her parents, Andrew and Heather.
There was a private family funeral in accordance with her wishes, and a wonderful family quiz night was held at Bradford Grammar School on Saturday 31st January 2015 in Eleanor's memory.
