In June 2010 I am going to be climbing for the Macular Disease Society. 

Macular degeneration (MD) is the collective term for over 1,500 conditions which affect central vision by damage to the macula, a small area of the retina at the back of the eye.  It is estimated that there are over 500,000 people with macular conditions in the .  Macular degeneration is the most common form of visual impairment in the and throughout the developed world. 

It is an incredibly frustrating condition because although only a small part of the retina is affected, it is the part used for detail and means the sufferer can never see the 'whole picture' as there is a blind spot in the centre.  It can make it impossible to drive, read unaided, recognise faces from even a short distance (which can be very embarrassing!), read music, watch television or use a computer as all these things require a high level of visual acuity. 

I was diagnosed in 2007 with a form of Macular degeneration called Stargardt's Fundus Dystrophy; a genetic junior form of the disease.  The Macular Disease Society is a self-help society for those diagnosed with any of the eye conditions encompassed by the overall name of Macular Disease.

The Society is dedicated to providing information and practical support so that those with the condition may make the most of their remaining vision.  They provide a counselling service and a helpline. 

They also sponsor research into causes, treatments, low vision and rehabilitation, and campaign for better services and access to services and treatments. 

I am funding the cost of the expedition myself, so 100% of any money donated will go to the charity.  I would really appreciate anything anyone can afford to give.
