We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

Two years ago, my grandmother was diagnosed with bowel cancer. An operation and several months of recovery later, she was on the road to recovery, typically determined to continue living her life to the full.

Unfortunately, far too soon, cancer then decided to rear it's ugly head again, this time in the form of breast cancer. My Nana, again, had the cancerous tumour removed, in a mastectomy operation.

After getting back on her feet, again, and deciding that two encounters with cancer was more than enough, Jane started to get her life back on track, with a huge, and renewed appreciation for life.
Last year, everything was brought to a halt again when we discovered a shadow on Nana's lung in a scan. After further tests, it was found that the cancer had returned, and after an operation by the fantastic team in Heartlands, Nana, refusing to be beaten, started rebuilding her life for the third time in a typically inspiring way, with even more
positivity than before.
Just before Christmas this year, my Nana was working in the garden when she fell. After being checked at the hospital, we received the worst imaginable news. The cancer was back, for the fourth time, in the form of lung cancer, as a secondary tumour.

Unfortunately, this time, the tumour is very aggressive, and Nana won't be able to beat this one, no matter how hard she fights. But my god, is she up for a fight.

So, we decided to do Pretty Muddy, to raise money for Cancer Research UK, and to make Jane proud, in the hope that in the future, people as inspiring and brave as Jane, won't have to go through the cancer, the treatment, and all the hidden trials the disease entails.
No-one should need to prove how inspiring and brave they have to be to fight cancer.

I've formed a pink army, in aid of Miss Jane Ireland, all of whom are ready to throw themselves into muddy pits, crawl through the cold, and come out the other side for your sponsorship. Or they will be, anyway.

The Army consists of:
Ella Cockerton. Jane's Granddaughter.
Sam Cockerton. Jane's Daughter.
Bethany Neville. Ella's Best-friend.
Laura Furniss. Jane's Daughter-in-law.
Cam Thompson. Laura's daughter.

Six chemotherapy sessions later, and Nana is now living with my Mum and I, remaining inspiringly brave, typically positive, and despite everything, actually wanted to do Pretty Muddy with us. Anyone who knows Jane will know this is just typical of her. Truly a one in a million.
And with any luck, she will be watching us from the sidelines, yelling at us to run faster.

It won't win. And we will fight. Cancer play's dirty- but so can we, beacuse
hell hath no fury life a woman in pink.

Ella. 17. Granddaughter.

I'm joining Cancer Research UK's Race for Life this year for my Nana, so please sponsor me and the rest of Team Ireland - it's quick, easy and totally secure.

Events like this are vital in funding Cancer Research UK's life-saving work into preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer. By sponsoring me, we can unite and create an army that cancer can't ignore. By sponsoring me, we will beat cancer sooner.
