Bedford Half Marathon · 13 December 2009
Well, this all came about when a great friend agreed to come out to India with me for 2 weeks over New Year. We are competing in the tuk-tuk rally from Chennai to Kanniyakumari. The organisation supports Round Table India, and in particular the Freedom Through Education programme which sets up schools in areas much needing one, some of which we will get the opportunity to visit en route. Anyway, to cut a long story short I was keen to help raise some money for the initiative, but did not feel I could reasonably ask friends to sponsor a 1200km hooley on a motorised vehicle down the East Coast of India.. So I had to think of something quite a bit more challenging. A half marathon? Argh!! While I seem to be surrounded by people who do halfs, full marathons and even ironmans, I have happily admired from the sidelines, secretly delighted I had nothing to do with it. But if they could, I could. Fine. The Bedford Half is on Sunday 13 Dec, and I now have a number - 843 - so there is no going back. I found a 10 week training package online and have been sticking to it as best I can, even wearing through a pair of trainers..
So should you decide to sponsor me - and I would be so pleased if you did - let me explain that this plea is two fold: whilst any cash donations will come with me to India (the charity is not registered in the UK), all online donations will go to Ataxia UK, which I would dearly like to see some progress in as I have close family affected by.
Thank you for taking the time to read this! I will let you know the results after the race. There's a bottle for champagne for whoever guesses my finishing time, or comes closest to it!! I will give it to the winner when I next see them! Just annotate the time on the webpage or let me know before Sunday 10am.
RESULTS: 1 HOUR 59 MINUTES AND 4 SECONDS!!! Gav, at 1:59.17 you were pretty much dead on! Champagne coming your way.. Thank you to everyone for your encouragement and donations, it makes such a difference.
