Last year, the world lost a warrior.
My best friend Elias Taylor passed away in August having fought a long and hard battle with leukaemia for over 5 years. Eli was an inspiration to myself and everyone who knew him, whether it be through his sporting prowess or how he handled his treatment. From Watford Grammar, to the University of Birmingham and beyond, I'll never forget a moment of our friendship, although the stories will remain between the two of us...
He was lucky to have state of the art treatment at UCLH, a centre of excellence for haematology cancers. In a few years’ time, research will have the answers that would have allowed Elias to beat his illness once and for all. Sadly, it's too late for Eli, but what a legacy it would be if we could fund the last bit of research that completes a vital piece of the jigsaw and makes dying of leukaemia a thing of the past.
So rather than sit on the couch and watch football all weekend, together with a team of fundraisers, I'll be cycling 175 miles from Paris to London in July. Following this I’ll also be joining close Friends and Family of Elias on a 2 day, 28 mile hike across the West Highland Way in Scotland. All proceeds will be going to a UCLH Haematology Research fund, ring-fenced for this research and known as The Elias Taylor Vegas After Party.
I can't think of a better way to honour Elias' life and bravery than to embark on such a challenge far beyond my own comfort zone - although I've heard the lycra can be pretty snug!
Thanks for all your support, roll on July! xx
