We challenge attitudes on mental health to help anyone affected by mental illness

Story

Hello everyone,

Along with others, I am planning to run the Bath Half Marathon on September 5th this year, to raise money for Rethink Mental Illness and in memory of my wonderful sister Poppy who we miss more than anything 💕🏃‍♀️🏃🏃‍♂️

Poppy struggled with severe depression from 14 to 16 years old, and the pain that this illness brings has been such a devastating thing to see. There have been so many who have been heartbroken by the loss of Poppy, and I really believe there is a lot more to be done to help remove the stigma surrounding mental illness.

I've chosen this charity because Rethink Mental Illness not only cares for people suffering with mental illness, they also campaign to fight the stigma surrounding illnesses like depression. I feel like these things can be so so difficult to talk about, and I remember Poppy would sometimes tell me that she felt guilty for having depression, and for feeling sad all the time. This was so upsetting to hear as this is an illness that is never, ever a person's fault. I think support, raising awareness and talking about this is really important for helping to remove the stigma attached to mental illnesses. This can hopefully help to reduce the isolation that people feel while struggling.

56% of young people said they think people with mental health issues their age will be treated differently, and 55% said they would lose their friends. Supporting Rethink Mental Illness can help young people feel less alienated and isolated, and more willing to talk about their struggles with mental health. Rethink campaign to change laws and provide residential care, a helpline as well as specific support for young people which is really great. The thought of the money I raise going towards helping (save) one person's life is really encouraging me to do this. Have a look at their campaigning and support work they do on their website to learn more.

Don't feel you have to, but if you can spare anything, please do donate to this fantastic charity, striving to make a difference to people's lives nationwide. Any donation at all counts, let's raise some money and help save people struggling with mental illness.

In memory of beautiful Poppy.
