Story
I first ran the Race for Life in 2011. It was such a fantastic day seeing all the women who had entered running to raise money for such a brilliant cause. I ran the race then for my Gran and my Uncle Bob but sadly, this year, I am running the race in memory and dedicated for a few more members of my family.
My Gran was diagnosed with breast cancer when my Mum was pregnant with me in 1995. I was born on 13th of July and my Gran was able to know me, her only grandchild, for the last month of her life. Cancer has taken the chance of my Gran watching me grow up and so many other important events that she should have seen. Cancer took away the chance of my Gran to see her two daughters on their wedding day. She didn't get to meet her 4 Grandsons and second Granddaughter and last year, she missed my 18th birthday. This year, it will have been 19 years since she passed away. 19 years that we have lost with her because of cancer.
In 2005, my Uncle Bob was diagnosed with a brain tumour and after a long battle with cancer, he sadly passed away. As a child, I didn't really understand what was happening and even though my Mum and Dad had explained that he was ill it didn't make sense that one day, he just disappeared and we never saw him again.
Last year, we lost my Aunty Mary to cancer. Although we were not close, I felt that I had to visit her on her last couple of months in hospital and say goodbye. It was one of the most horrific experiences for me. She was in so much pain and with every visit, I was slowly watching her die.
My Boyfriend's Nan has battled cancer once before and so sadly is having to do it again. Every time we visit her, she does not lose her fighting spirit and it's so inspiring to see her not giving up. She is the reason I decided to enter Race for Life again this year.
I have a high risk of getting cancer and for me, every penny raised for cancer research means that we are one step closer to saving millions of lives lost and affected by this dreadful disease!
