We are supporting SIA because there are currently around 50,000 people living with a spinal cord injury in the UK, with a further 2,500 people sustaining an injury every year. That means every four hours, someone will hear the news that they may never walk again.

There is no cure for spinal cord injury and it is a non-improving condition, meaning that most injuries will lead to permanent, life-changing paralysis. 66% of spinal cord injured people will not receive the specialist care they need - such as access to a specialist spinal rehab until - significantly reducing their chances of rebuilding a fulfilled life post-injury.

As well as the inability to walk, spinal cord injury also has many other debilitating effects, including loss of normal bowel and bladder function, respiratory control and can also lead to depression, anxiety and psychological traumas that take much longer to heal than the physical trauma.

SIA has existed since 1974, with over forty years' experience supporting spinal cord injured people, their friends and their families to show that there is hope for a fulfilled life after spinal cord injury.

SIA currently support over 11,000 members of the spinal cord injured community, and last year supported over 750 newly injured people with support, advice and access to specialist services which they otherwise may not have received.

SIA receives no government funding, and without them many of the people they support would struggle to adjust to life after injury. They may be denied the care and financial support they deserve, may never be able to get back to work, support their families, or ultimately have any chance at a normal life after injury.

So, we are thrilled to be undertaking the Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise funds for this incredible charity. We have a whole range of experience levels within the group, so for many of us this will be a massive challenge!

This is where we'll need your help - any donations great or small will be hugely appreciated and get us closer to our target. We'll be posting regularly to keep you updated with our training and progress but also what your donations can help SIA achieve.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
