We provide free eye care to help eradicate curable blindness

Story

No man, woman or child should go BLIND simply because they cannot afford treatment!

Dear all,

Thank you very much for visiting our page. A team of medical students from London will be setting up numerous eye screening camps in Pakistan in co-ordination with the Graham Layton Trust. Some of the most deprived areas will be visited where the situation is particularly dire.

Blindness: The Stark Reality

  • Population of 165 million growing by 2.1% per annum.

  • 1.7 million blind of which 80% or 1.3 million are curable.

  • An additional 170,000 become blind every year.

  • 16.5 million have impaired vision.

  • Average monthly per capita income is Rs 4625 (£40).

  • 1 out of 3 people live on less than Rs 1800 (£15) per month and 91% of their income is spent on food.

  • Another 1 out of 3 live on less than Rs 3600 (£30) per month. With the rise in food prices they have also been driven below the poverty line.

  • Given the cost of good private eye treatment is beyond the capacity of 2 out of every 3 Pakistanis, we shall be setting up free eye camps to provide treatment to the most deprived closer to home.

The camps will be supervised by the medical staff of LRBT (Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust - the sister charity of GLT in Pakistan who have 16 high quality hospitals and 39 smaller outreach clinics throughout the country). Activities will include examination, refraction, screening as well as provision of medication for routine eye ailments. Those who require detailed examination and/or surgery will be referred to the nearest LRBT hospital and the cost of any further treatment  will also be covered!
