I'd like to thank everyone who has donated so far. Your support is a huge encouragement for me during the trying practice sessions. I reached one third Everest's height last weekend and it floored me:)
Richard finally sets a date to climb Everest... kind of.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I recently lost my Mother to stomach cancer. Nothing before in my life had prepared me for the sudden loss of one of the most important people in my life. The frustration and the feeling of powerlessness drove me to search for a more practical output for my anger and do something positive to help future sufferers of this awful disease.
Thing is, I hate running, swim like a stone and can't pull off a moustache. That means marathons, triathlons and movember are out of the question. Then I realised that if there is one thing I've always done well it's climbing, something that caused mum bucket loads of anxiety since I began.
I always used to want to climb mount Everest as a child. As I grew up, I inadvertently became more of a rock climber than a mountaineer and the attration of Everest was replaced by the likes of El Capitans nose. Then I remembered something that we'd done a few years ago. Four friends and I climbed the height of Mount Everest as a relay indoors. To this day it was the hardest thing I've ever done and each of us only climbed one fifth the total distance.
I figured that with proper training and a focused attitude, one person should be able to climb that distance at speed. So I decided to contact Guinness World Records and request to set a world record for:
Speed Climbing The Height Of Mount Everest On An Indoor Wall
Guinness have gotten back to me and have confirmed it as a record. All that remains now is to actually climb it.
I am aiming to raise £1 for every vertical metre climbed. That's £8,848 in total.
I will be climbing at the Castle Climbing Centre near Finsbury park in North London where the owners have kindly allowed me to train for the event and hold the eventual attempt.
I aim to complete the challenge on 26th April 2012 though this is subject to change a little if I become injured.
It's 8848 meters high which means after subtracting my own reach from my local walls height of 12.5m, I will have to climb the wall a total of 918 times.
If you can't afford to donate, your services as a belayer for a part of the day would be most welcome. At this stage, I don't have an accurate enough understanding of my pace to know how long I'll be climbing for but I'm aiming at less than fourteen hours. I will need lots of people to pull the rope through for me.
