-EDIT- THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS. NOW HIT £400. Got a month left, so going for the big £500, my stretch goal, this is the last time i'll up my target, £500 would be absolutely incredible-
5 years ago, grandad started showing signs of Dementia, he rang me one day to tell me he'd gone to bed and left the oven on and set fire to his kitchen. I was living up in Newcastle at the time, quit my job the same day and moved back to Bradford that weekend to take care of him (whilst still working full time)
In the years since, i've seen dementia take everything from a man that was so intelligent he was mensa certified, he's lost the ability to walk at all, and developed parkisons to boot. The world is a really lonely and scary place for him, and worse still, he feels like hes a burden on me as i visit him in his carehome every other day (he unfortunately had to move into care as his balance went) and take him out in his wheelchair for a day out every other saturday.
The hardest part of this by far was when for a period of time he forgot who i was, despite daily visits, when he looked me dead in the eyes and asked 'who are you again? I know i know you'. Luckily for me, unluckily for him, he had a T.I.A which brought him back a little and seemed to re-jog his memory about me (we call it 'a stroke of luck' quite darkly).
Dementia and Alzheimers are awful diseases that take everything from the person and their family. So, this year i'm trying to raise £350 for Alzheimers UK by trekking the Yorkshire 3peaks in 1 day. Its an uphill marathon, and i'm proud to be taking part because-
1. I want to prove theres no length i wont go to for him. And
2. To further research towards a cure, in the hopes that one day other families wont have to suffer through seeing a relative lose themselves while being physically (relatively) fit.
Anything at all you can donate helps, and i'll be thinking of you all on June 29th when i set off at 7am and when i finish at 10pm. 💪🏻
