Everest Base Camp Trek · 11 June 2008
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. All my life I have wanted to go to Everest Base Camp and at last, in October, I am going. An amazing set of coincidences led me to a trekking company that includes a visit to the Himalayan Rescue Association Hospital at Pheriche, a day's trek from Base Camp.
This hospital was refurbished by a doctor who lives in my village in Oxfordshire. In order to do so he set up a small charity, the Everest Memorial Trust, to raise funds in the Wychwoods. The hospital is the only medical facility in the area for climbers and locals, and undoubtedly saves lives. The doctor, Sandy Scott, and others in the village, have been out there many times, and have done some of the work themselves, including setting up a memorial for all those who have died climbing Everest. I will be doing the trek with my nephew very much in mind - he died, aged just 27, on 2 Jul in a climbing accident.
The Trust has many ongoing expenses, both for the hospital and other projects, and I am thrilled to be helping such a worwhile cause in a very poor and remote area. I have kick-started my fundraising by donating £500 which I received for doing some work for our local magazine, The Wychwood. I will be paying all my own expenses for the trip, so every penny that you donate will go to the charity. I have also pledged to make up any shortfall from my target myself. So please sponsor me now!
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Everest Memorial Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
