2023 Update - Flo's page

Richmond RUNFEST Kew Gardens 10K 2019 · 14 September 2019 ·
UPDATE: 3rd May 2023 - Today is the 10-year anniversary of Aline's disappearance. Once again, I will be training for the Kew Gardens 10K / maybe even the Half Marathon. Can we get this to £1000 by September!?
All donations will go to the amazing Alzheimer's Society - a charity funding research, campaigning for change, and supporting people with dementia - UK's biggest killer.
In Aline's memory - a dedicated cook and flower lover - I ran the Kew Gardens 10K in September 2019. I ran the Richmond 10K in February 2020. So far we have raised £883.
Any donations would be really appreciated - (even just £3).
Did you know that "60% of people with Alzheimer's will wander at least once"?
Have a read of Aline's story below:
(tldr: She wandered off and was never found. Buy a GPS tracker! It could save a life)
This is not something I speak about often, but maybe it should be...
On a stormy, wet, and unusually cold Friday night (3rd May 2013), my 68-year-old grandmother, Aline Lillina Penon, suffering from Alzheimer's, went missing after wandering off in the surrounding countryside near a tiny village called Vourey, in the South of France.
To this day, after hundreds of hours of searching, 10 years on... a single trainer insole in a muddy field was the only sign of her.
(For any Frenchies, you may know this Christophe song - Aline. Have a listen to the lyrics, they are strangely relevant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E_Hyn53acA)
Aline loved to walk, and the beautiful countryside scenery provided a good distraction for her disappearing mind. Unfortunately, while my grandad was busy in the garden and thought she was resting in the house, she set off, on her own and was never found.
However, looking back, and more importantly, looking forward - a GPS tracker would have saved her life.
I urge anyone with a relative suffering from dementia to invest in a wrist or pendant GPS tracker for them. Look up the 'Herbert Protocol' too!
This traumatic experience is not something we want other families to endure.
This unimaginable experience is not how we want other people to end their lives.
This can all be avoided with a GPS tracker. Please learn from this. Please buy a GPS tracker for your relative. It could save their life.
