MONA FOUNDATION UNDER WATER

Over the last few hours it has been raining up to 150 liters per square meter in the Girona Province which has caused serious flood damage to the Primate Rescue Center ‘Mona Foundation’ in Girona (Catalonia).

Thanks to the quick reaction of the staff, volunteers and friends of MONA, the situation at the moment is under control and the animals are not at risk, although a great portion of the facilities are under more than half a meter (2 feet) of water. The greatest damages took place in the warehouse, the kitchen and the macaque enclosures. The outdoor chimpanzee enclosures are also flooded.

We have not yet been able to calculate the total financial toll that the flooding has created to MONA and could only approximate an estimate from what we have seen damaged so far.

Before taking any damage control measures the Team made sure that the animals at the centre would be all safe. They were frightened and confused and needed a lot of calming. After some hours we managed to get the indoor enclosures dry again, but water was still flooding most of the rest of the facilities.

The most important part was to make sure that the animals were safe, but know we have to think ahead, confronting the damages and costs caused by this flooding.
