Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’ve decided that I wanted to raise money for a charity that aims to help young people who use drugs/alcohol as a way of dealing with personal issues such as low-self esteem, poor body image, depression, anxiety, racial abuse and bullying etc

Failing to confront personal issues and negative thoughts such as low self-esteem and turning to alcohol/drugs in aim of numbing any self doubt and feeling confident in our teenage years can rlly be so detrimental to how we perceive and value ourselves as we enter adulthood.

I realise that this is not the case for everyone, and some people use drink/drugs simply to have a good time with their mates. But for teenagers who are suffering with feelings of remorse/ self-loathing/ low confidence and anxiety, alcohol and drugs often become more than that. They can be considered a short term escape from negative feelings. But abusing these substances can rlly have consequences on their mental health and self-perceptions in the long term.

I think it’s so important that vulnerable young people are able to discuss negative feelings and are assisted in finding healthy coping mechanisms which are sustainable in the long run rather than suppressing any negative self-perceptions through substance abuse as this is a trait which can be carried on into adulthood and cause others areas in their life to fall apart such as work,, relationships and physical health!!

I aim to run a kilometre for every 20 pounds that is donated for this cause, hopefully raising a total of 420 pounds by April 1st (my birthday) so that I can run a half marathon (21 kilometres). All of the money I raise will go to the Amy Winehouse foundation , a drug and alcohol awareness prevention programme which runs in secondary schools across the U.K. The charity aims to educate students on the underlying reasons for substance misuse and to build resilience in students against issues such as self esteem and peer pressure!!

This isn’t me telling everyone to go stone cold sober forever, I just think there needs to be greater awareness and support for those who are mentally suffering so that they don’t turn to alcohol/drugs when times get tough as this can honestly make things so much worse for them.

Anyway even if all u can donate is 50p I will literally be so appreciative as this is an issue that I rlly think isn’t vocalised enough as our generation normalise and glamorise drinking/drug culture when the reality is that there are individuals out there who are suffering as a result of part-taking in these things!!

Thank you xx
