Story

The Project

All money raised will go to the cost of labour and materials to build the house, with our local contact Esther Lupafa co-ordinating the project on the ground with all labour and materials sourced locally to increase the social impact of the build.

Check out the church website to see more photos of some of the homes that have already been in the village where 10 homes have been built to date through local fundraising.

 The Cycle

On Saturday 2nd July six cyclists (Stephen, Mark, Gareth, Matthew Laura and Johnny) will undertake the 100m route taking in Comber, Downpatrick and Ardglass before taking the ferry across to enjoy some of the scenic routes around upper Ards.

Interested in joining us?

Whilst the full 100 mile cycle isn't for everyone, we would welcome anyone who would like to join us for part of the ride, or even just find a safe place to cheers us on our way!

You can view our planned route here: https://www.strava.com/routes/2973353528236561008

We've divided the first 93 miles into four stages:

Stage 1: 31.5 miles from Ballywalter to Whiterock

Stage 2: 28.5 miles from Whiterock to Ballykinler (60)

Stage 3: 19.5 miles from Tyrella Beach to Strangford (79.5)

Stage 4: 13.5 miles from Portaferry to Glastry Presbyterian (93)

We would ask that anyone joining us for one of the first four stages is able to sustain an average speed of around 15mph over the given distance and terrain (we may not actually go that speed on the day!) They also need to be self sufficient by bringing their own water, snacks and spare tube etc. (and make plans for getting to and from their starting point!)

For the remaining 7 miles the group will meet up with supporters at *Glastry Presbyterian* (note new location) to finish the final stretch in convoy. This stage is open to anyone able to cycle competently on an open, public road, and speed will not be important.

The final section of the route will take us along Well Road onto Well Close, finishing at the Church Car Park.

How you can support us

We have set ourselves the ambitious target of raising enough to build an entire house for approximately £6,700 but we cannot do that without your support.

Should you wish to contribute to this worthy cause, we'd greatly appreciate any help you can provide. For anyone not able to pay online, please mark your envelope clearly so we know it is for the Malawi Cycle, and any cheques should be made out to Ballywalter Presbyterian Church. Gift Aid is so important for boosting our fundraising so please also let the Finance team know if you are eligible.

You will be able to follow the group's activity live on the day via a link shared on the church's facebook page.

You're also warmly invited to join us at our celebratory BBQ from 5pm on Saturday 2nd.

Your prayers will be greatly appreciated as we continue to prepare for the event, and if you see us out on the road over the next couple of weeks please be sure to show us encouragement!
