I am doing a 100km cycle in aid of the Brierley Hill Project.

 

The Brierley Hill Project is a community support centre working with members of a community suffering hardship of some kind in the deprived neighbourhood of Brierley Hill in the .

As I know you will be aware you don’t need to go to a third world country to see and experience the challenges that a cycle of poverty, poor educational attainment and poor parenting, to name but a few, has on a community. These are exactly the people that this project seeks to engage and support by helping individuals and families break this negative downward spiral.

The project is unique in offering wrap around support for the most disadvantaged of this community and aims to work with people in a wide range of ways often resulting in the people the project helps becoming active volunteers at the heart of their own community.

To help you understand the work of the project read the stories of two individuals below. there names have been removed to protect their identity

 

Person 'X'

Due to ADHD and behavioural problems X had become dysfunctional in his school environment. Having been offered one-to-one support by a project worker and engaged as a volunteer in the project X's behaviour has shown marked improvements to the point where his educational assessment has shown significant changes for the better. X has since moved into further education and is attending a local college. He often revisits the project, expressing his thanks to the support he received.

 

Person 'Y'

Y was a drug user and this lead to deep-rooted anger management issues and he was violent towards many people. Through one to one mentoring we took time to look at all the bad things that had built up in his life and managed to replace them with positive activities.

Y has now been ‘clean’ for more than two years and has regained self-confidence. When he first came to the project he was homeless and found himself in jail on numerous occasions. Now he has a partner, is living in accomodation and is actively seeking education and employment. He is also a valued member of our social action team of the project and volunteers to help those in need.
