Story
I had decided to take on this challenge back in March, soon after COVID 19 brought the country to a complete standstill. Of course there were many worthy charities to choose from, but I had been keen to choose a children's based charity, primarily linked to my role as a Child Protection Social Worker and seeing first hand how the Pandemic has adversely affected the lives of many children and their families.
Although I have a background in marathon running and have completed an Ironman triathlon, a 100KM run falls deep into the realm of Ultra-marathon running, an area until now, I have no experience in whatsoever.
I began a twenty-six week training program in March, which involved a steady increase in mileage each week. The mid-week training has been fine really, but the long-run on the Sunday has been grueling at times. My experiences thus far have been that distances beyond 50KM tend to take a real toll on the body. I've already had to push the event out two weeks to October after an injury, but all part and parcel of the journey I suppose.
Another challenge has been time management, not easy with three small children, but am so lucky to have a hugely supportive and understanding wife.
So, on Sunday the 11th of October 2020, I plan to complete a solo 100KM run around the Tank Field, Mayfield, Cork. All things going well on the day, I hope to complete the challenge somewhere between 12 to 13 hours. I'm under no illusions though, this is going to be tough!
Your contribution, whether you donate a little or a lot, will make a positive difference to the lives of many vulnerable children.
Thank you so much for your support.
Shane
