10k a Day for the month of May · 1 May 2020

Amyloidosis is a rare, often fatal disease, caused by accumulation of protein fibres, amyloid, in the tissues. The Fund provides invaluable support for research and patients in the National Amyloidosis Centre at the Royal Free Hospital.

Story

I will be running 10K every day from the 1st of May until the 31st of May to raise funds for Amyloidosis Research. I'll be documenting my adventures each day as we progress!

What is Amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis is a rare disease caused by a damaging build up of abnormal protein fibres, called amyloid, within the tissues and organs. Amyloidosis can affect any part of the body and lead to life threatening organ failure. It causes the death of about one person in every thousand and there are about 6,000 cases in the UK at any time. The Amyloidosis Research Fund within the Royal Free Charity supports the research, development and patients of the UK NHS National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC) at the Royal Free Hospital. The Centre, established in 1999, is funded directly by NHS Specialised Services to provide diagnostic and management advisory services for all UK amyloidosis patients.

Why am I fundraising for this charity?

Amyloidosis is a cruel disease and I have watched it chip away at the lives of two people close to me – my uncle and a close family friend. They battle to overcome one hurdle, sometimes enjoy a brief respite and then another hurdle seem to get thrown in their way. Trying to explain this rare disease to others is one of those hurdles – it is complicated in nature, sufferers have different symptoms and it simply doesn’t have the instant recognition of other illnesses.

I hope that in challenging myself I can bring about a little more understanding about Amyloidosis and raise funds for research.
