We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

When: Wednesday 27th June 2018

Time: 6.30pm for 7pm start

Where: 5km circuit anti-clockwise around the Regatta Lake at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Adbolton Lane (approx 1 hour walk).

Start: at the blue seats by the Boating Lake Club House

Do you know anyone affected by cancer, past or present?

Do you want to show your support as an individual, family or group?

Are you, yourself a sufferer?

Is the Race for Life too formal for you?

Do you want to bring a wheelchair, back-carrier or pushchair, take a gentle contemplative stroll or just walk the dog?

Or do you want to be more competitive and run, cycle, scoot
or skate?

If yes, then the Memorial Walk is for you. Totally inclusive, it is an opportunity for self reflection. Children and adults have, in the past, used ingenious methods to get around eg. skipping, walking backwards, unicycling.

Moira Kelly was diagnosed with breast cancer whilst pregnant. Imagine the shock, and the effect on family, friends and the community. She died in November 2004, at the age of 40 after a brave 11 month battle. She was wife to Steve and a working mother to three young girls, aged 1, 4 and 6 at the time. Alice, Emily & Isabel Wong.

Back in 2005, parents at Crossdale Drive Primary School, joined by staff, family, friends and pets, organised the first walk around the lake in Moira’s memory. Since then, community groups, including 4th Keyworth Brownies and 1st Keyworth Scouts have taken part in this simple, donation-only event which has raised over £10,000 over the years. All the money raised supports Cancer Research Fund UK, the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. They continually find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and are entirely funded by the public. www.cancerresearchuk.org

So dust off those trainers, walking boots, scooters or bikes and join us. It has always been a great evening to reflect and catch up with friends or make new ones. The walk is not just for Moira but for all those carers and sufferers out there. Come rain or shine we will be there. We even provide sweets for those that finish!

Hope to see you there again this year. Together we can make a difference.

Although barriers are in operation at the country park, the exit barrier will be raised after 6pm, so you won't need to pay for car parking.
