We work in disadvantaged communities to improve literacy skills and life chances

One in six run

1 in 6 adults in the UK have a reading age of an 11- year-old.  To raise awareness of this issue, and funds to help address the problem, National Literacy Trust employees Jack Sallabank and Jim Sells will run 160 miles, over 10 days, during October 2011.

Each day Jack and Jim will run 16 miles in a different region of Britain. The 15th mile of each leg will take them to a primary school where they will deliver a fun literacy session and lead the children, and a local or national celebrity, on the final mile of the day. Schools can use this as an opportunity to raise funds for the National Literacy Trust.

The run will commence on Monday 3 October 2011 and will take 10 days.

The majority of our host schools have now been confirmed! Our host schools will benefit from: a free author / celebrity visit, a personalised curriculum-based project to work on in preparation for Jack and Jim’s visit, a fantastic local and national publicity opportunity, a free literacy session on the day and a great fundraising resource pack with plenty of exciting prizes to encourage you to hit your fundraising targets. We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone applied, we really were overwhelmed by the response, and even if you were unsuccessful this time, we would still love your participation in One in Six fundraising. To find out what part your school can play, contact Becca Wright at becca.wright@literacytrust.org.uk.

The run will commence on Monday 3 October 2011 and will take 10 days.

Jack and Jim are running in the following areas on the following dates.

  • Monday 3 October: St John’s RC Primary School, Edinburgh
  • Tuesday 4 October: The Education Village, Darlington
  • Wednesday 5 October: Burnwood Community School, Stoke
  • Thursday 6 October: Cyfarthfa High School, Merthyr Tydfil
  • Friday 7 October: Clutton Primary School, Bristol
  • Saturday 8 October: St Joseph's Primary School, Exmouth
  • Sunday 9 October: Oxfordshire (TBC)
  • Monday 10 October: All Saints CEVA Primary School, Northampton
  • Tuesday 11 October: Ghyllgrove Primary School, Essex
  • Wednesday 12 October: Smithy Street Primary School, London

Remember, we still need starting points. Each day, Jack and Jim will be setting off from either a library or a business that is willing to fundraise for the National Literacy Trust (as well as providing a cup of tea to get their legs going!). So if you work in a library or a business with an office in one of these areas, please get in touch. For more information contact becca.wright@literacytrust.org.uk.

You can keep up to date with their progress as they post regular blogs, videos and pictures. Here is their blog.
