Story

The Dayton YMCA at Gaviidae is committed to being part of the solution in creating a thriving downtown.

This commitment calls on us to be responsive to the changing needs of our community. Your generosity also ensured that Edison High School students continued to build skills for graduation, college, work, and life through the Y’s Beacons program, which was delivered in the school. While the Northeast Minneapolis high school was temporarily closed, the Beacons after school programming moved to the Douglas Dayton YMCA at Gaviidae in downtown Minneapolis. Students had access to gathering spaces and open gym times with their Beacons staff members. Clubs continued to meet, including the Somali Cultural Club that utilized the Y’s Fitstudio space to lead dance rehearsals in preparation for an Somali Cultural Club Showcase performance.

Beyond what the YMCA has been doing inside its spaces, we have been out in the community.  We had a youth obstacle course at the Community Connections Conference at the Civic Center and plan to be part of the Mill City Farmer’s Market, National Night Out at Golden Medal Park and partner with the Downtown Improvement District and the Minnesota Timberwolves at The Downtown Farmers and Makers Market.

As more and more people are looking at screens, the Y is promoting life experiences.   While virtual is a convenient option for interacting, it does not replace the connection that is made face to face.

Our activities help boys and girls of all backgrounds and abilities to build integrity, self-reliance and leadership. With a convenient location, just 30 minutes from Minneapolis, Ihduhapi is a great option for first-time campers. Our progressive skill development, adventure programs and leadership development keep kids coming back, year after year.

This summer the Douglas Dayton YMCA is providing over 100 free memberships for students entering or in high school.  This will give them access to all 20 YMCA locations and all the amenities.  This guarantees the opportunity to have a fun and safe summer.
