On Friday 2nd September, to celebrate Tearfund's 54th year, we're doing the 5th Thames Triathlon covering 54 miles, with 10 miles of running, 10 miles of kayaking and 34 miles of cycling.
It's a huge physical challenge for everyone, but we're motivated by knowing that Tearfund's work is life-transforming for poor communities around the world. Tearfund are working through local churches to unlock people's potential and helping them to discover that the answer to poverty is within themselves.
We have seen the suffering in Ukraine. The shockwaves from that conflict are reverberating around the world. Fuel and food prices are rising. We can feel that here in the UK, yet it is the poorest countries and communities – many of whom are already facing multiple crises – that will once again bear the brunt.
Across the greater Horn of Africa region (including Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya), a terrible hunger crisis has been building following the worst drought there since 1981 – 13 million people are experiencing severe hunger every day. Yemen and Afghanistan are also on the brink of famine. Conflict and climate change are pushing millions of people towards total disaster.
Your donation today could provide emergency relief such as food, safe water, and hygiene kits. And, in the long term, we will continue working through local churches so that whole communities can lift themselves out of poverty and build resilience, to bring them hope and a future.
