Aimee's Fund supports palliative care services and those providing for critically ill and injured adults and children. We support Keech Hospice in Luton specifically. The charity is a lasting legacy to Aimee Varney, who was a nurse at Keech. She died suddenly on 16th June 2013, aged 21 years.

Story

In 10 weeks time, on 16 June, it will be exactly seven years since my beloved daughter died very suddenly. Aimee was 21 years old and I miss her more with every passing day.

Every year since she died, we have held a special picnic in Aimee's memory. Friends, family and colleagues come along to talk about her and to keep her memory alive. This year, because of Covid-19, we will not be able to do this, so I've decided to do this fundraiser instead.

On 17 July last year, I was critically injured in a motorbike accident. I spent 15 days in intensive care, 12 of those on a ventilator, with my life hanging in the balance. If the incredible East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA) crew had not come along when they did, I would not be here today. I owe them my life and I will never forget what they did for me.

It will take a long time to recover fully from the accident and I know that there are some things that will never get back to how they were before. My rib cage was smashed to pieces and both my lungs were punctured and collapsed. I can't go up hills without getting out of breath, something I could do easily before. I broke my pelvis, my back, my shoulder and my collar bone in the accident. I'm still in a lot of pain and walking is still a challenge. I've worked really hard to build up my stamina and can now walk a long way, as long as it's flat, slow and with a limp!

Aimee's Fund is the charity my family set up in my daughter's name. It is her legacy and we have raised tens of thousands of pounds for Keech Hospice Care. We have now broadened our scope and will be supporting EAAA too.

So, what am I going to do? Aimee died when she was 21. I have decided to mark this by trying to walk the equivalent of 21 marathons, during these ten weeks, by her anniversary on 16 June. This is a grand total of 550 miles! It's going to be very hard but I am determined to do it.

Please give whatever you can. Every penny will go to supporting Keech Hospice care and the East Anglia Air Ambulance.

I will follow the lock-down guidance fully. I will do my walks early when there are fewest people around. I will make sure that I am always at least 2 metres away from people. I won't touch anything when I'm out of the house and I will wash my hands as soon as I get home.
