We fund research to stop prostate cancer killing men

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My name is Ian Barnaby (better known as Barney!).  I'm a member of Torbay Lifeboat Crew based in Brixham, Devon and this summer, I and around 20 fellow crew members will be challenging ourselves to run 500 miles (between us) over 24 hours, raising funds for (and awareness of) prostate cancer.  Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer, affecting around 1 in 8 men.  We sadly lost our former colleague Steve Lunn to the disease, and it's in Steve's memory this event is taking place.

Steve (in the photo above, taken on 10 July 2007 at Buckingham Palace with his lovely wife Di) passed away on 21 April 2010.  He had to leave the lifeboat crew some ten years ago, but never lost touch with his lifeboat colleagues, and his family (who still live in Brixham) are delighted to be involved with our fundraising effort.

Over 24 hours on Sat 18/Sun 19 May, we will run the 500 miles over a 1.5 mile circuit between Torbay Lifeboat Station in Brixham, along the marina, past inner and outer harbours and the town centre waterfront to a point outside the Brixham Environmental Lab at Oxen Cove.  Every single one of us is over 40 (and some of us over 50!).  We're already training hard, and will have plenty of our friends and family - and volunteers from Prostate Cancer UK - supporting us on the day.  Local businesses will host collecting tins and sponsor forms, and of course our Just Giving page is here.

We'd love you to cheer us on in Brixham on the day!  The event will run 12 noon to 12 noon, and our wonderful wives and girlfriends will be offering refreshments from the WAGs Tea Room, alongside a Fish BBQ (both outside the lifeboat station in Brixham).

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, your money goes DIRECT to Prostate Cancer UK, so it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Our target is to raise a whopping £5,000 - but we lifeboat crew are well used to a challenge, and we reckon - with your help - WE CAN DO IT!
