Story

Our team ‘Peaked Too Soon’ will be attempting the National 3 Peaks Challenge on Saturday 7th July 2018. The objective of this challenge is to climb to the submits of the three highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales. Those being Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon, within 24 hours.

The total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft). The total driving distance is 462 miles, which will be completed by Russ Wilks who has generously offered to come along for the ride.

Aside from being a massive personal achievement for all of us involved, we shall be completing this challenge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Cancer is something that will effect everyone in some way at some point in their lives, either as someone diagnosed with cancer or in supporting a friend or relative.

On a personal note, I lost my grandmother over Christmas 2017 to terminal cancer which took her within 6 months of being diagnosed. I witnessed the excellent support and service that Douglas Macmillan provide to both the person and their family. My mother Dawn Birkin aged 57, is currently battling with liver and colon cancer, that has only been diagnosed in the last month. So I know the support that Macmillan provide is invaluable.

Other members of our party have also been personally effected by cancer, in particular Adam who has lost his father and Paul, who’s brother-in-law is currently fighting a cancer diagnosis.

I never thought that cancer would affect me, and that it was something that happened to other people. But when it comes it hits us hard and Macmillan will be there for you. So let’s be there for them, and spare what you can to support this extremely valuable cause.
