This month, Chickenshed marks its 35th birthday and we’d like you to help us celebrate.
From humble beginnings in a disused chicken shed to a membership of thousands in the and abroad, Chickenshed has inspired many individuals. Working with an inclusive creative process, which means everyone is welcome and everyone is valued, the Company have produced more the 1,000 pieces of original, outstanding theatre since it began in 1974.
Chickenshed is a unique organisation that exists to open minds and empower all individuals, by encouraging them to see the creative potential and ability, both in themselves and in each other.
Now we need to look forward to our future with your help.
Chickenshed does not receive any statutory funding from the Government or the Arts Council. We rely on donations from individuals, trusts and businesses to keep our pioneering work going. We make a difference to people lives – not just those in our membership, but to audiences, schools and communities touched by our work.
In fact, 60,000 people benefit from Chickenshed every year. The total cost of this is £3.5 million. it is only through people like you who choose to support our work, that we can raise this sum.
Although we'd be grateful to receive any amount, here are just a few examples of where your money will go:
£350,000 pays for 600 children and young people to benefit from our theatre workshops for one year
£35,000 pays for thousands of people outside of London to be influenced by our inclusive creative process through workshops and performances
£3,500 pays for one young person to carry on learning and developing by attending a Chickenshed BTEC or Foundation Degree course who would not otherwise be able to continue in further education without our financial support.
£350 pays for children to benefit from one of our artistic members of staff leading an outreach session in their school
£35 pays for our visually impaired members to have access to a script and workshop notes produced in Braille.
£3.50 pays for a child to attend a theatre workshop session building on self esteem, feelings of self worth and confidence.
Become a part of our history by securing our future.
“The degree to which this wonderful idea has been pursued is a profound example to us all. It deserves our greatest possible support and if we fail to become involved, we shall become the losers.”
Lord Attenborough

"In this business it’s usually a case of everyone out for themselves. But here, all those ideals you've been told can't work, such as equal opportunities, looking after your mates, and teamwork, not only do work, but are also very powerful creative forces. It's an impossibility that has been made so possible, it's overwhelming."
Bob Hoskins
“When I first came to Chickenshed I was very insecure. Now I feel confident and love being able to express myself and show what I am capable of.”
BTEC Student
“I’ve learnt that it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, it’s what’s going on inside that counts.”
