Story
On Sunday 27th March the North Glasgow Football Development Group (NGFDG) will hold a sponsored event with a difference. Players young and old, together with Mum’s and Dad’s, will attempt to run, cycle or walk the 20 Miles of the Forth and Clyde canal from Lochburn Junction in Maryhill to Bowling and back.
The NGFDG is a charitable football organisation whose stated aim is to create opportunity and promote inclusion through football. The organisation currently facilitates a range of teams off all ages and community football sessions across north Glasgow. The age range of players is 3 – 43 and the benefits of active participation, health and fitness and social interaction are highlighted throughout the club’s work.
Like all charities the club relies heavily on fundraising activities to help it survive and prosper and continues to look for new and different ways to do fulfil this need. Committee members met to discuss ideas and come up with this event as a way to include all who would wish to take part and to promote healthy activities other than football.
The club hopes to raise around £2000 from the event which will help towards the upkeep of the 9 North Kelvin United teams which the group facilitates every week with a current membership of around 160 players. Children’s team co-ordinator, Robert Thorburn explains; “There is a huge amount of work completed and money spent to facilitate a charity like ours and events like this are an ideal chance to come together as a group”.
The event is open to non members also; therefore if you would like to read more about getting involved or about the event or find out more about the NGFDG visit the website at www.NGFDG.co.uk or email the group at info@ngfdg.co.uk.
